Childhood, Education  and Early Life

Brevis was born in Johannesburg, April 29, 2003 but he grew up in Pretoria, Gauteng. He studied at Afrikaanse Hoekseunskool (Affies) – a school which has a rich history in cricket. Both AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis attended the same school. Whether that was the influence on his game, or not, the comparison with De Villiers which was to lead him into the professional game is hard to overlook.

His father, Jack Bruis, had a cricket pitch in their yard so that Dewald and his elder brother Renard could practise. The exposure of that early home-based structured practice in him coupled with what he got in school preconditioned what was to come. At the age of 18, he signed with Northerns prior to the 2021-22 domestic season, and made his professional debut.

He is 5 feet 10 inches tall, and is a right-handed, left-spin bowler. The number of his jersey -17- is an intentional reference to the number of the ODI debut of AB de Villiers.

During his first season of IPL Brevis had the opportunity to play seven games in which he scored 161 runs at a strike rate of 142.48. He was announced immediately with his first ball in IPL cricket; a 29 off 19 against Kolkata Knight Riders. He struck four successive sixes of Rahul Chahar in an over in the season, and struck what was officially declared to be the longest six of the tournament of 112 metres. The figures were small in the company of which the player was destined to bear so big a burden, the glimpses were actual.

IPL 2023: The Tricky Intermediate Period, 2024

In 2023, Mumbai Indians renewed its contract with Brevis at the same cost, although he did not have many opportunities. He only had two matches, due to the increased batting resources of the team. The 2024 season was also not very prolific as it had only one match and 32 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders. This time, he later on would say led him to relapse into domestic cricket, which ended out to be productive. His performance in the first-class competition and his contribution to the MI Cape Town in their win of the SA20 title brought him back some form and confidence, off the IPL limelight.

IPL 2025: The Gamechanger with CSK

It turned out to be the 2025 season of the IPL. Brevis did not even sell at the mega auction- a shock considering his profile- and was later made a replacement of the injured Gurjapneet Singh by Chennai Super Kings. The player under the replacement rules was limited to ₹2.2 crore salary.

What ensued was his most successful IPL season ever. He had a strike rate of 180 and an average of 37.50 with six innings having 225 runs. His moment of glory was on May 25, 2025, in the 67th match of the season against Gujarat Titans: he struck 57 out of 23 hits four fours and five sixes, and was named Man of the Match. Another thing that was highly discussed in the tournament was his hitting of 30 runs in one of the over in the season. CSK immediately renewed his contract with IPL 2026.

The IPL 2026: Season In Progress

CSK had Brevis on ₹2.2 crore of its pre-IPL 2026 accounts. He was unable to play the first three games of the 2026 season, as he was injured. The last game he played was against Delhi Capitals at MA Chidambaram stadium in which he scored 0. His 2026 statistics will keep on evolving with the season still going on.
