On January 27, 1982, Barabati was the venue of the first international match played at the stadium, an ODI between the India and England teams. It was first introduced into Test matches between India and Sri Lanka in January 1987.

History of Barabati Stadium

Barabati Stadium was established in 1958 and quickly became an important sporting venue in Odisha. Before receiving international status, the ground hosted visiting teams such as the MCC, West Indies and Australia. Its first ODI came in January 1982 when India played England. India won the match by five wickets. Five years later, Barabati hosted its first Test match between India and Sri Lanka. India won that match by an innings and 67 runs, with Dilip Vengsarkar scoring 166.

The stadium later became better known as a limited-overs venue and has hosted major ODI matches and several memorable high-scoring contests. One of its most famous ODI matches came in 2017, when India scored 381/6 against England, while England replied with 366/8.
